Tinnitus: ringing in the ear
Tinnitus , more commonly known as ringing, buzzing, ringing in the ear, can be caused by various medical causes such problems in the spine, circulation, vascular origins … or as we have appointed some kind of alteration in the ear or nervous system. In the first case, called objective tinnitus is caused by physical agents such as vascular problems, circulation, which can be detected with the tools needed by an otolaryngologist. It can be solved with a particular medication. The case of subjective tinnitus is those that the problem is as we have explained the principle in the auditory central nervous system. There is no agent to produce it as in the case of goals, so we can say that there really is not as sound, just as subjective perception of the person concerned.
Tinnitus therapy involves the use of headphones with a noise familiar. This sound stimulates the auditory system accustomed, so that we can focus the patient on that sound. The audiologist must configure the sound so that it is also possible to hear the tinnitus, otherwise we will not be able to get a good habituation. To understand this we can say that most of us when we were sitting watching TV in our house, we can hear how it starts to rain by the noise of rain on the windows. But what happens if we focus our attention on television? Get stop listening to that sound, but really follow raining even if the rain is more intense than before.
Controversy over vaccine
During the past 20 years we have had the pleasure of actively participating in what is now a fact clearly established: chronic infection by certain types of human papilloma virus (HPV) is the necessary cause for the development of cervical cancer. The application of prophylactic vaccines against HPV types most prevalent in cervical cancer will allow a drastic reduction of the disease in the space of 10-20 years, if these vaccines are given before contact with the virus, ie in the early teens and before first sex. These findings are the results of randomized clinical trials made public in the drug agency’s most influential and prestigious as the FDA or EMEA.
Recently, we read statements in the country in expressing some disappointment with the introduction of HPV vaccination in the Spanish population pressures on the Government claiming, non-emergency / urgent care due to illness, low efficiency of the vaccine and the need to improve Pap smear screening in before introducing an HPV vaccine (El Pais, August 30, 2007, September 11, 2007). All governments are under pressure to support or delay the introduction of new drugs and they are not specific vaccine in question here. The value of mass vaccination can not be dismissed simply by applying such pressure. The effectiveness of the vaccine is very high, exceeding 90%, if administered properly.
